In Listening to Children, Listening Skills Expert Kay Kay shares the result of many decades of studying and teaching the art of communication, along with her experiences as a mother, stepmother and grandmother.
She raises the awareness of issues and situations often encountered when communication with children and their potential consequences. She encourages and assists people to assess their listening behaviour and where changes could be made. Kay's coaching style of supportive enquiry, deep insights and compassionate suggestions guide the reader towards achieving a higher level of understanding about the active process of listening.
Listening to Children is divided into three sections:
1) Awareness in Listening to Children
The first section is designed to raise awareness of the importance of listening to children and the many things that can get in the way of good listening.
The chapters describe a number of poor listening habits and the potential damage they can have on the development of children and upon our relationship with them. In examining our conscious and unconscious intentions for our conversations with children we can choose the intentions that will have positive outcomes.
2) Skills for Listening to Children
This section will equip parents and others responsible for children with constructive listening skills. These help with the effective parenting and the guiding of children of all ages.
Things you will learn; appropriate places and timing for affective listening, the giving of full attention while listening, the awareness of body language and interrupation. In listening with compassion we can learn to listen without judgement, without criticism and without making assumptions. Active listening provides a framework for dealing with emotions, with difficult situations and for supporting children through many of life’s challenges.
3) Application of Listening Skills
This section offers suggestions and recommendations for applying constructive listening skills in a wide variety of situations. Chapters include Developing Trust, Uncovering and Understanding Issues, Dealing with Bullying or Conflict and Family Communication. We explore ways of answering children's questions and dealing with what we hear them say. We create strategies for guiding children to success and developing affective listening cultures.
The insights, information and examples in this book are tremendously helpful to parents as they support and guide their children to be happy, confident and responsible young people. In becoming accomplished constructive listeners, adults demonstrate to children the listening skills that they would like their youngsters to acquire.
